Lake Manyara is the start of our photo safari. It’s located about an hour and a half west of Arusha.
Entering the lake, elephants, baboons and water buffalo abounded. Giraffes appeared from the bush. And birds naturally were drawn to the lake’s side.
The first day photographing is awkward. One hasn’t really settled into the country, the sights of the animals or one’s equipment yet. The safari truck bounces about and every time someone moves, so does the camera. Focusing, getting the right exposure, and creating an image require concentration.
The sheer wonder of seeing so many “exotic” animals simply roaming the countryside is also distracting. And amazing.
Lake Manyara is beautiful. Marshes harbor birds; muddy ponds offer water buffalo a spot to sleep and relax. And overlooking the lake, the Serena Hotel where we stayed offered spectacular views and grounds.
